Walking Holidays & Cottage Accommodation in Wales

Welcome to Cottage Holidays in Wales.....

The Taff Trail

The Taff Trail Long Distance Footpath links Cardiff and the Welsh Valleys to Brecon. It is 88km or 55 miles long, though this figure is deceiving  as there are many community or circular routes that link into the linear route which itself may have more than one route running parallel at certain points.

The Taff Trail, is so called as it follows the route of the River Taff, more or less  from its' "mouth" to its' source  in the Brecon Beacons, approx. 55 miles in length .

From Merthyr to Pontygwaith it follows the old Glamorganshire canal, which is on the Aberfan side of the valley. It then swaps sides to join The Trevithick trail, which runs from Merthyr to Abercynon, on the Merthyr Vale side of the valley.  The river actually divides both villages, into Aberfan and Merthyr Vale.

Along its length there are many other walks that are accessible:

  • The Cambrian Way
  • Coed Morganwg Way
  • Rhymney Valley Ridgeway Walk
  • Taff Ely Ridgeway Walk
  • Usk Valley Walk
  • Marches Way

Check these out on the appropriate Websites/ Ordinance Survey Maps.

Cwmcarn Forest, is well known for its many Mountain Biking trails, but there are also Walking trails of varying difficulties and also those suitable for families.

You can take the car too, and stop off  at your leisure along its' 7 mile length, to take in the spectacular views. More information on "Visit Caerphilly" website.
